You might have to give others a little shake to get them to pay closer attention to you. If you're really aware, you can notice when others are giving you the "Uh huh, yeah" answers but not really engaging in the conversation and that's your cue to drill down on certain points to force them to give you more calculated responses. It also helps if you angle things in a way that interests them.
